Reliable PAT Testing in Linthwaite
For most of us, electrical appliances are simply an everyday part of our lives that we don’t really think about too much. We don’t stop to consider the immense amount of electricity that surges around and powers our homes, cities, and lives. Portable Appliance Testing, or PAT Testing, is the process of periodically testing your electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use and should be an essential part of any company’s health and safety policy.
Maintaining proper use of that electrical power and making sure it is safe for everyday use is absolutely crucial to your own, your families, or your worker’s safety. That is why proper electrical PAT testing is not something to take lightly.
PAT Testing helps to prevent Electrical Fires in the home or workplace.
Is PAT Testing a Legal Requirement?
This is a question we get asked frequently. The legislation’s of specific relevance to electrical maintenance is the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
The regulations state that Portable Electrical Equipment must be maintained in a safe condition and that maintenance is a legal requirement. The only way to comply with that is to carry out PAT Testing at TRS Electrical Linthwaite and establish an appropriate routine schedule with us. So whilst PAT testing in itself isn’t legally required it’s a recognised way to ensure compliance with the various regulations.
The IEE Code of Practice for In Service Inspection and Testing of Equipment sets out the standard to which each appliance is comprehensively tested and we use the very latest PAT testing equipment made by Seaward, the leading providers of PAT Testing equipment and software to carry this out. Also, most commercial insurers also require your electrical items to be PAT Tested and we always advise you to check with them to see the frequency of testing that they require.

What Is PAT Testing?
PAT Testing is when a certified professional electrician comes to your commercial or residential property, and examines all of your appliances to make sure that they are ‘up to code’–so to say.
This process is rather simple, but involves the electrical inspector using specialised testing equipment to test each of the electrical appliances. The TRS Electrical PAT testing machine will let the the electrical inspector know if the appliance meets all of the safety standards set in place by the Occupational Health & Safety Act of 1974.
Once the appliances have been tested by a certified TRS electrician, and pass all safety standards, TRS will then place a certified label on the device that indicates when the PAT test was performed, and when it should be performed again in the next year.
It is advised that PAT testing is performed annually to ensure the safety of employees in workplaces.
Why Is PAT Testing Necessary?
A large percentage of commercial and residential property fires are started due to faulty appliance electrical wiring. Due to this, it is always advised that businesses and even homeowners always ensure that their appliances are operating in a safe manner. While electronics produced in the UK are all designed and manufactured to meet the strict safety standards put in place by UK legislation; that isn’t always the case with certain appliances, especially after some time.
As the world becomes more globalised, and manufactured electronics find their way into the UK from abroad, the safety of these appliances is not always up to snuff. Many appliances made overseas do not always undergo the level of testing that UK legislation requires, and thus can lead to potential hazards that can result in loss of property or even life.
